Martinez led the Lady Vipers with 18 points and seven rebounds as Memorial came away with a 54-41 win over Alice at the Memorial senior campus gym.

“It means a lot for us because we are the group that got it for her,” said Martinez of being part of the team that took Jimenez’s career record to 400-158 with the non-district win.

“She is a really good coach and has taught me a lot. We want to keep getting a lot more wins for her this year.”

Memorial (5-5) took Jimenez’s record to 399-157 last Monday with a win over Beeville, but fell to El Campo the next day. A week went by before the Lady Vipers were able to play again, and getting past the 400-win mark is something Jimenez was looking forward to.

“It means that I’ve coached in a lot of games,” said Jimenez who started her career at Bloomington before moving to Victoria to coach at Stroman before consolidation. “It’s a milestone that I’m proud of. But I’m kind of glad that we got it out of the way.”

She said she’s excited about the wins, but it came through the players she has coached. On Tuesday, and for most of this season, there has been players than usual that she’s been coaching.

The Lady Vipers used 12 players in the win over Alice, and see the depth as a positive the team will be able to use as the season progresses.

“As far as depth, and bench play, we have a better team this year than we have in a while,” Jimenez said. “We have the ability to rest our starters, and we have players who can step in when our starters are struggling. That’s a good thing to have.”

Coming off the bench, Sha Johnson was Memorial’s second leading scorer with 10 points. Johnson was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field until heaving up a last second 3-pointer from around mid-court.

Amy Torres added six points, while TeAaron Harvey hit the lone Memorial 3-pointer and finished with five points. Kaelynn Reyes led the Lady Vipers with five assists, while Amber Flowers came away with two steals. Maria Mandel led the Lady Coyotes with 10 points, while Olivia Salas contributed eight.

Martinez scored the game’s first basket to make it 2-0, and the Lady Vipers would never be tied or lose the lead. Memorial led 24-15 at halftime, and 44-29 going into the fourth quarter.

“They came out to play and did good things to separate ourselves from Alice early in the game,” Jimenez said. “Alice did some things that could have prevented us from keeping our lead, but we played well. I’m proud that we came out and played.”

The win marked the second victory of the season for the Lady Vipers over Alice. Memorial picked up its first victory of the season with a 64-48 win at Alice, and didn’t want to let a victory over their Class 4A opponent slip past them.

“We came out confident and we knew what the Alice was going to bring,” Martinez said.

“We were determined to beat them and we came out strong.”

A Job Search Coach is different from a Career Coach in that the emphasis is on the tools to land a job, not the guidance to select a career.

Psychologist :-

Although not a coach per se, a licensed professional psychologist can run tests to help you determine where you might succeed, or help you overcome behavioral impediments to your career. Psychometric or vocational tests are often administered by non-accredited practitioners as well so watch out- no matter what the battery of tests, it is the interpretation that makes the difference. Be careful of charlatans who push their favorite tests at great expense to the client, since it is often the case that the testing company pays them a commission.

The lines between coaches are often blurred because other than the psychologist there are no governing boards, licensing agents or industry standards. Anyone can call themselves a coach. It is up to the prospective coachees to determine their needs, vet the prospective coach and have clearly defined objectives and metrics for success. Even then, caveat emptor.

The Kingston native and former NHL star led a spirited one-hour practice after participating in a news conference with a healthy gathering of reporters and cameras.

“It’s just been a whirlwind the past 24 hours,” Gilmour said.

“I’m going to enjoy this. I am home … I’m taking this as a challenge. This [coaching] is where I

Gilmour said he plans to pick a captain for the team after becoming familiar with the players. The team did not have a captain under former Career Coach Larry Mavety, who remains with the squad as general manager.

Meanwhile, Neil Shorthouse, the director of marketing and client services at the K-Rock Centre, said ticket sales for Gilmour’s first game on Friday at the K-Rock Centre are well ahead of the pace set by previous Frontenacs games.

Mr. Cockrell breathed a sigh of relief. His Ford Escape was wrapped in an ad for the specialized employment-listing site and it had been attracting a lot of attention.

The trooper “said his wife had just got laid off and they have a baby on the way,” recalls Mr. Cockrell, who until two weeks ago was director of public relations for Jobing.com.

He gave the trooper his business card and a company pamphlet listing job-search tips. He says the trooper thanked him — and added: “Be sure to turn on your blinker when exiting the freeway.”

As the nation’s unemployment rate soars, professionals who provide job-related services — such as career coach and executive recruiters — say their advice is in high demand.

Layoff victims ranging from clients and business associates to family and friends are seeking their help in finding jobs. And while they’re trained to keep an emotional distance, some say the reverberating fear coming through people’s voices is starting to tug a little too tightly at their heart strings.

“It’s hard not to be affected,” says Mr. Cockrell, who joined Jobing.com in 2007 and recently changed employers after learning that his position and several others at the employment site were going to be eliminated. “People are just worried sick. I wish we could help every single person who needs a job.”

Over the past few months, Aaron Brooks, managing director at the Chicago-based recruiting firm Mergis Group, says several laid-off executives have told him that if they don’t find a job soon, they’ll have to sell their homes.

One added that his teenage son had just quit his after-school activities to save his family money. “I got a lump in my throat when I heard that,” says Mr. Brooks.

A laid-off Lehman Brothers executive broke down in tears during a recent session with Ray Sclafani, president and founder of ClientWise, an executive-coaching firm. This person explained that he’d lost most of his retirement savings when the investment bank collapsed. “I’ve had to work really, really hard on making sure … not to get emotionally involved,” says Mr. Sclafani.

Making matters worse, employment experts say, their workday no longer ends when they leave the office.

“I have a lot of friends who work on Wall Street and they’re like, ‘What do I do?’” says Deborah Brown-Volkman, a career coach in East Moriches, N.Y., who specializes in counseling financial-services professionals. “It’s hard because on one hand I really want to help, but on the other hand I have to set a boundary for myself or I would be working all the time.”

Sally K. Bales, president of Bales Co., a Jacksonville, Fla., recruiting firm, says she can’t turn down the many clients who’ve been asking her lately to give career advice to their family members. “These people have been good to me over the years and it’s payback time,” she explains. Ms. Bales admits that her willingness to help out is taking its toll. “I’m definitely on overload,” she says. “I’m lucky to end the day at 11.”

Some career advisers say they’re going to special lengths to help people.For example, Judit Price , a career coach in Boston, says she’s lowered her prices for laid-off professionals by up to 20%. “I have never seen people so scared,” she explains.

Career coaches at New York University banded together last month to create several new programs aimed at helping seniors land jobs, says Trudy Steinfeld, executive director of the school’s career-services department. Among them is a workshop called “How to Recession-Proof Your Job Search.”

Professionals at all career stages are having thoughts about transforming their lives by reinventing their careers. We are undoubtedly in a recession and you might be thinking that it is especially bad timing to consider a job change.

The truly blessed lifers stay because they actually love their work. Perhaps they have found their calling and have the wisdom to know that passion for ones work does not equate to a permanent state of nirvana.

They are more fulfilled by the plus column and never expect an empty negative column. They don’t confuse a fulfilling career with a fairy tale. The lifer route isn’t for everyone.

Perhaps an opportunity has landed in your lap that you should not walk away from.   Remember, moving on for good reason doesn’t mean you are a quitter, nor does it portend instability or doom. It might just mean that you finally “get it!”Life that is -your life.  So go on and claim it!

Re-inventing your career, especially during the first brave steps, can be a bit tricky.  When a major company or brand decides to transform itself the skies darken with “transition teams, consultants, transformation processes, communication vehicles etc.”  People are not that different; they represent a personal brand. They need similar due diligence and structure.

A good career coach can provide an environment of supportive autonomy by balancing support and freedom for self direction and re -invention.  My clients are smart, I just try to make them wiser,  well equipped and better positioned to achieve the mission.

No doubt that self awareness, resilience, adaptability and realistic optimism are fundamental to whatever formula there might be for success.

A career blueprint that leverages your passion, values and strengths is what’s needed.  Engaging your head, heart and gut will help bring the blueprint to life.
